Ethiopia Says Reliable Power Supply Is Key to Industrial Development
An uninterrupted power supply is essential for Ethiopia’s industrial development and long-term economic growth, according to Feseha Yitagsu (PhD), Chief Executive Officer of the Industrial Parks Development Corporation (IPDC).
Speaking during a panel discussion at the the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) in Guba, Dr. Feseha said sustained investment in power infrastructure is critical for attracting large-scale manufacturing and positioning Ethiopia as a competitive industrial hub.
The discussion was held as part of the “Sile Ethiopia” forum organized by the Ethiopian Press Agency in collaboration with IPDC.
Dr. Feseha noted that Ethiopia’s significant investments in energy infrastructure over the past two decades have helped lay the foundation for the country’s ongoing economic transformation. However, he stressed that much more capacity is required to support future industrial expansion.
“To reach middle-income status, Ethiopia must increase its current power supply by at least ten times,” he said.
As a regional comparison, he pointed to Egypt, which currently generates and supplies approximately 60,000 megawatts of electricity.
He added that energy-intensive companies are increasingly seeking locations within Special Economic Zones, where reliable infrastructure is a key determinant for investment decisions.
According to IPDC projections, the combined power demand of the Special Economic Zones and industrial parks managed by the Corporation is expected to reach around 2,500 megawatts within the next five years.
Highlighting the scale of industrial energy needs, Dr. Feseha said that a single aluminum manufacturing facility can require more than 1,000 megawatts of electricity.
He emphasized that reliable and affordable power is one of Ethiopia’s most important competitive advantages in its efforts to attract international capital and establish itself as a leading industrial destination in Africa.
The panel discussion also examined the broader economic impact of completing the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam, including its expected contribution to industrial expansion, tourism development, regional connectivity, and national cohesion.
